You Are The Church

by Dick Hilleary

For we are fellow workmen (joint promoters,
laborers together) with and for God; you are God’s
garden and vineyard and field under cultivation,
[you are] God’s building.
(1 Cor. 3:9, The Amplified Bible).

As God’s people, we don’t just go to church; we are the church. We don’t just worship God in a building; we are “God’s Building” (I Cor. 3:9), “A HOLY TEMPLE IN THE LORD (Eph. 2:21). As God’s building, we need a foundation; we also need other bricks.

We are “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets [of the Bible], with Christ Jesus Himself as the chief cornerstone” (Eph. 2:20). Our sole “authority” is the Bible, God’s actual Word!!! We proclaim Jesus as God and as the only way to be saved. We need the church to show us things about Jesus that we can’t see on our own and to steer us away from errors that we would make on our own. We need the authority of “the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth” (I Tim 3:15).

In the true church we are part of a building with a firm foundation, and each of us is one of many bricks. One brick alone does not make a building. Jesus uses a wonderful variety of “bricks,” people from many different backgrounds, to build His church. “You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house” (I Pet. 2:5), “built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit” (Eph. 2:22).

In recent days our church has begun to adopt a master plan for spiritual growth. We are expecting to add new members to our “family.” A part of this vision includes a church facility of our own. All this is in line with the text from Isaiah 54:2-3:

“Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; do not spare; lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes. For you shall expand to the right and to the left, and your descendants will inherit the nations, and make the desolate cities inhabited.”

One great missionary once said, “Expect great things from God’ attempt great things for God!” We know that our God, the All-Sufficient One, is more than up to the task. It is we who must be so yielded to the Lord that He can work in and through us to fulfill that which He expects us to do. And what is that? It is the same challenge which God made to the apostle Paul. We are to:

Open blinded eyes...
Turn them from darkness to light
Turn them from the power of Satan to God...
That they may receive forgiveness of sins and
The inheritance of eternal life. (Acts 26:17-18).

Our goal is to fulfill His purposes; go where He leads, empowered by His Spirit, obedient to His will, and ever following Him Who is our all in all. And, whereas this may sound ever so spiritual...let us remember that He said that without Him we can do nothing.

CHANGES ARE HAPPENING. YOU ARE A PART OF THEM. A MOST VITAL PART YOU CAN PLAY IS TO PRAY WITH JOY AND THANKSGIVING FOR WHAT HE IS DOING IN OUR MIDST.

And so...get ready for an exciting ride. Remember, YOU are the church. All of what happens will depend upon you!!!!!!
