WWJD?
by Dick Hilleary
What does that mean? Surely we all know that this is a “slogan” which many have penned in recent days for lapel pins, bumper stickers and a host of other places of display. The question is plain: WHAT WOULD JESUS DO? But it is more than a bumper sticker slogan. It is a question which every sincere believer should answer for him or herself.
WHY?
BECAUSE, the life of a man who professes to be a believer should bear the stamp of Christ!! The Bible says that “He who abides in Him (Christ) ought to walk in the same way He walked.”
(1 John 1:6)
AND HOW DID HE WALK?
In total obedience to His Father. He walked in love. He went about doing good. He cared for people. He encouraged people. He made a difference in the lives of all with whom He came in touch. He never left anyone He met without making a difference. Some accepted Him and His ways. Others rejected Him and His ways.
While He was here on earth, He demonstrated Who God is and what God is like. How did He do that? By being Himself. He told us that if we have seen Him, we have seen His Father. All we
have to do is look at Him and listen to His Word to know exactly what God is like and how God feels about us ... you and me.
Jesus told us that He IS the Way, the Truth, the Life ... and that no one can come to God except
by way of faith in Him. When He intercedes for us and in behalf of us, we are forgiven, freed, and made new. As one person put it, we are disinfected.
Jesus relates to us now just as He related to people in need during His ministry on earth. Jesus walks with us, lives with us. He comes to us, stands with us, pleads with us, absolves us and cleanses us.
SO ... how can we be sure that we belong to Him? By looking within ourselves. By asking ourselves the question: “Am I really trying to do what He wants me to do?” Someone may say, “I’m a Christian; I am on my way to heaven; I belong to Christ!!” BUT ... if he doesn’t do what Christ tells him to do, he is a liar.
Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, "I know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 1 John 2:3-4 (NKJV)
Those who do what Christ tells them to will learn to love God more and more. That’s the way to know whether you are a Christian.
We are to do what Christ did and join Him in what He is doing now. This means being faithful in worship and support of the
church. It means getting next to people, strengthening them with Christ’s strength, praying for them, being patient with them, being kind to them, bringing the peace of Christ into their lives, accepting them as He would.
AND ... for the benefit of those who may say, “I don’t always know what Jesus would do!!” I have only one word. Get under the teaching of the Word on a regular basis. This church brings a diet of God’s Word regularly on Sunday mornings. There is an adult Sunday School class at 9:30 a.m. for those who desire more. And, we have a Wednesday evening Bible Study at 7:30 p.m. for those who want even more. Currently we are studying the Parables of Jesus.
BY THE WAY, YOUR ETERNAL DESTINY MAY WELL REST UPON HOW YOU ACCEPT THIS CHALLENGE!!
There it is! God’s desire is that we be like Jesus. That is not optional. He said so in Romans 8:29. We have our marching orders. Come, let us see what Jesus would have us to do.
