Under Construction
by Dick Hilleary
Some time ago I observed some folk wearing buttons with the letters BPGINFWMY. They meant, "Be patient, God is not finished with me yet." And well we might all wear such a button. For
which of us has arrived at that stage of spiritual perfection at which point we might wear a button saying, “I’ve arrived!!!”
We in the kingdom of God rest upon the assurance that once we become Christians, we are deemed to be “new creations” (II COR. 5:17). This simply means that we are re-created by God into new beings. In fact, the classic Scripture dealing with the new-birth experience states that “We are His
workmanship, created in Christ Jesus” (EPH. 2:10). However, it goes on to state that this “new creation” was created to do certain “good works” which God has prepared for him to do.
One day Billy and Ruth Graham were driving through a long stretch of road construction. They had numerous slowdowns, detours, and stops along the way. Finally, they reached the end of all that difficulty, and smooth pavement stretched out before them. This sign caught Ruth’s attention:
“End of construction. Thanks for your patience.”
All of us are “under construction.” When we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord we begin a lifelong process of spiritual growth. The Holy Spirit works in us to remove our selfishness (PHIL. 2:4), to renew our thinking (ROM. 12:2), and to develop qualities in us that are more and more Christlike
(COL. 3:5-14). Paul described this process as a work of God. He said, “He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (PHIL. 1:6)
And what part do we have in this growth process? In the simplest of terms ... cooperate with God!!!
Early in the last century, sculptor Gutzon Borglum gazed at the cliffs of South Dakota’s Black Hills. He envisioned what no one else could ... the sculpted faces of US presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt.
Borglum and his crew were suspended on ropes 500 feet above the valley floor. They used everything from chisels to dynamite to create the 5 story high images. It took 14 years to complete the project. Borglum’s housekeeper occasionally went to visit the site. She once asked a worker, “How did Mr. Borglum know that Mr. Lincoln was in that rock?”
How indeed? Borglum knew what was in the rock because he saw with an artist’s eye what he could create out of the raw material with which he had to work.
And so it is with God. With His loving eye He sees the potential in even the hardest human material. With His loving hands He begins to make of us a “monument” of His genius and grace. God made us alive in Christ. He can make us more and more like Christ ... IF WE PUT OURSELVES IN HIS
HANDS. Through the “chisel” of His Word He can produce something wonderful (II TIM. 3:16-17).
When God’s work is complete, “we shall be like Him (Christ),” the greatest monument to God's creation (I JOHN 3:2), perfectly conformed to our Saviors likeness. |
