The Reason We Sing
by Rick Evans

The following is a note to worship leaders, and all those who participate on a public platform in the name of the Lord. Although music is certainly one of the most public forms of community worship in the church today, I believe we have to take a closer look at the true meaning of "Worship" and it's effect on how we sing, serve and live. The following points were developed to help us focus on our act of "Worship" with our hearts tuned to God's Word, the Bible.

Music is a Form of Worship. There are many forms of worship we can offer The Lord, but few can be as satisfying as music. There is a special bond between music and the heart of the believer. We can all agree that there is a soothing and peaceful feeling when the body of Christ joins in and sings to the creator of the universe. We have felt the unity and strength in corporate musical worship. This is one of God's many ways of direct communication with us. We, as believers, can all enter in to that corporate worship experience, yet we are not all called to lead it. We must make sure that if we sing the reason is

to answer the calling of The Lord on our life. If we sing to facilitate our own need to be in front of people, or to run away from the problems we cannot face, we hinder more than help. Music is Outreach. In our society, music has become an indicator of the emotional status of our culture. Because of this, it has also become one of the most useful tools in the church to this day. As a church we can "seize the moment", so to speak. Our music should be consistent with and reflective of the group of people we are trying to reach. The Lord has raised up this ministry to be a light to the lost. Our music should be effectively reaching the community with the light of the gospel. We should also be able to do it in a way that is

consistent with "good music" in our society. This is not a compromise of the gospel, but rather, an outreach to those who might be open to the calling of the Lord. Music is Warfare. Music, in and of itself, is a powerful tool. We must recognize that we are not just musicians using our "abilities", but also soldiers in a fight for life! Our enemy is a powerful adversary. He is looking for any weakness to exploit. We must put on the whole armor of God, or we run the risk of being defeated. Do not underestimate Satan's power. He knows you, and when you begin to work on the battlefield for Jesus Christ, you attract his immediate attention. Be ready to fight! Music is a Responsibility. We all have the awesome responsibility to live what we sing. "Thou shalt not take The Lord thy God's name in vain". These means that we should not lift up, or wear, the banner of Christ without meaning. We cannot stand in front of any group of people and proclaim the word of The Lord, and then live a life inconsistent with those words.

Remember, how you act away from your Fellowship is the signature on the integrity of its ministry, as well as your own life. Autograph it well! Let's always remember that God is not necessarily watching what we do, but why we do it. Let your act of "Worship" be a true representation of who you are in Christ Jesus. You can only affect the lives of others when the truth of what your saying has affected you personally.
God Bless.
