Christian Character Does Count
by Garry Brier

I listen to a Los Angeles news radio station that airs a commentary by a Jewish commentator named Michael Josephson. He entitles his 2-minute spot "Character Counts". He critiques human behavior and concludes with an encouraging tip on how to achieve a higher level of moral living.

Not long ago, I was impressed by the Holy Spirit that "Christian Character" really counts. We can see in the books of the Bible God's character. As children of God, we would do well to imitate our Heavenly Father. When we read about the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23), we realize that this is God's character. He is Love, and He wants us to love. He is Joy, and He wants us to have joy. The same goes for peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance.

The Word is God's will for us. We are told to be Holy; to fear not; to be not dismayed; to be strong and very courageous; to seek the Lord; to love the Lord with all our heart, soul and mind. Again, and again, we are instructed to continue moving to higher levels of Christian character.

There are questions about character that we could ask ourselves: Am I honest in business affairs? Do I arrive on time at my appointments? Do I report all of my income? Am I truthful with my family, my friends, and all who I come in contact with? Do I exaggerate? Do I lie?  Do I have integrity? Am I willing to admit a wrong and say I am sorry? Do I always demand my way? Do I break the promises I make?  There are many more questions that could be asked, and they would all lead to Christian character.

We cannot move to the higher levels, without evaluating our present character condition. God cannot put us in a greater place of responsibility unless we are ready to move up. Character flaws will hold us back from God's best!

I challenge you to take a self-inventory of your character. And when you take that inventory, do it in prayer before God. Tell Him you are interested in change and ask Him to reveal anything that might be keeping you back from His best. And always thank Him for the revelation. Expect an answer (Matt. 7:7). And always remember, that Christian Character does count.
