Investment Into Well-Doing
by Dick Hilleary

Two Scriptures blare instructions for our daily living. We are often told that when we do what God's Word tells us to do that there are blessings (i.e. benefits), which then follow. One of them is the well-known "Golden Rule." Yes, we are all familiar with the humorous paraphrase that "he who has the gold makes the rules." However, that does not inspire a chuckle from God. The "rule" is ... "In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets" (MATT. 7:12). Jesus means that this is a behavior, which gives full meaning to the laws of God as set forth in the Old Testament. In other words, it means obedience to His Will.

The second Scripture merely gives greater impetus to the first ... "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time (KJV - in due time) we will reap a harvest if we do not give up" (GAL. 6:9).

Regrettably, in a world of what appears to emphasize "what's in it for me?" these Biblical principles may not fly ... but, they are God's principles and to turn away from them because of disbelief or pride does not invalidate their truth.

NOT IMMEDIATE

One of the factors which often turns those of little or no faith away from practicing these principles is the fact that the blessings do not always come immediately ... and ... "proper time" is not always on tap like when one uses a micro-wave oven. And since the evidence is not forthcoming when it is wanted or expected, the assumption is that "it did not work."

Thus, we must have enough faith to rely on God's "proper time" or "due time." One thing is certain; the desired result is very unlikely until and unless we have made our investment of "doing good" ...or "well doing." And, in the economy of God, that well-doing must be done for the right reasons ...because it is right!!!

ONE GLASS OF MILK

An example of this principle is illustrated in the following story. One day a poor boy, who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for something to eat at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.

Instead of asking for a meal, he asked for a drink of water. She though he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you?"

"You don't owe me anything," she replied. "My mother taught us never to accept pay for a kindness."

He said, "Then I thank you from my heart." As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strengthened also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

Years later, that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, he went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day, he gave special attention to the case.

After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested from the business office to pass the final billing to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge, and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words: "PAID IN FULL WITH ONE GLASS OF MILK ... (Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly."

OPPORTUNITY RIDES IN CIRCLES

Many years ago a humble Scotsman strolling near his home in Darvel rescued a boy who was dangerously mired in a bog. The lad turned out to be the son of a nobleman who wished to reward the rescuer. The Scotsman refused gratitude for himself but agreed that the nobleman might help him to educate his own son. This the nobleman did.

The Scotsman's son ultimately was graduated from St. Mary's hospital Medical School. His name? Fleming ... Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of penicillin.

There is a sequel. During World War II, when Britain faced its darkest hour, the nobleman's son was stricken with pneumonia. He lived because of penicillin. His name? Winston Churchill, one of the great men who led the forces of good to victory over evil Hitler.

WHAT GOES AROUND...

The world tends to use that phrase about what goes around coming around somewhat loosely. As one who leans more on Spiritual truth, I would not put the saying into any type of sacred category. However, it does appear to be more or less true. BUT ... applied in a Biblical sense and with a heart and trust of faith, it is
true. Why? Because, the Bible says so.

The Bible says that doing good does reap rewards. In due time! But, it is important to remember that the doing of good is not done for the purpose of reaping a reward. It is done because the Object of our faith and affection ... our Example ... Jesus Christ, went about doing good as His Father was with Him (ACTS 10:38). He did it because it was right!

His followers are admonished to emulate Him (ROM. 8:29), to do what we do in a manner which honors HIM (COL. 3:23), to do what we do IN HIS NAME (COL. 3:16), and to make the focus of what we do pleasing to Him and not to men (GAL. 1:10). We are assured that when we demonstrate such a spirit of "well-doing," without becoming "weary in that well-doing," our Father is pleased with us. When we consider that investing in doing good is assured a wonderful return, even if in "due time," it makes sense to do so. AND HE WILL BE PLEASED!
